Het interview vindt plaats in het appartement van Patrick van der Doef in zijn woonplaats Amsterdam. Zijn werkkamer kijkt uit op De Zuidas, ook wel het ‘Manhattan van Amsterdam’ genoemd: een nieuwe wijk in de stad met indrukwekkende woontorens en kantoren. In zo’n inspirerende omgeving moet het heerlijk zijn een boek te maken over moderne architectuur. Dat beaamt ook de auteur. ‘Als je van architectuur houdt, dan is dit zeker dé plek om te wonen en te werken’. Op zijn bureau liggen tal van (foto)boeken over moderne architectuur. ‘Het is een uit de hand gelopen hobby. Maar ik houd ook van reizen. Ideaal als je altijd op zoek bent naar bijzondere architectuurlocaties.’ Inmiddels heeft Patrick ruim veertig steden in zeventien verschillende landen bezocht om voor zijn boek foto’s te nemen van iconische gebouwen.
Patrick, kun je vertellen waarom je dit boek hebt gemaakt?
‘Sinds 1997, toen in Bilbao het futuristische Guggenheim Museum werd geopend, is er een ware hausse aan icoonarchitectuur ontstaan. Bilbao was een industriestad in verval, maar is door het ontwerp van architect Frank Gehry een toeristische attractie geworden die jaarlijks meer dan een miljoen bezoekers trekt. Dit wordt het “Bilbao-effect” genoemd. Nu willen veel steden in de wereld een soortgelijk icoon. Kijk naar Valencia (Spanje), Milwaukee (VS), Changsha (China) en niet te vergeten het Midden-Oosten (Abu Dhabi, Dubai en Doha). Maar ook multinationals, Chinese staatsinstellingen en hotels willen opmerkelijke gebouwen die ze gebruiken als hun “visitekaartje”.
Hoe meer ik me in deze ontwikkeling verdiepte, hoe enthousiaster ik werd. Steeds vaker trok ik er met mijn camera op uit om beeldbepalende gebouwen vast te leggen. Zo ontstond het idee voor dit boek met als titel;: ‘Het Bilbao effect’.
Ik ging op zoek naar hedendaagse, iconische architectuur die een onvergetelijke indruk achterlaat; ontwerpen waarmee de architect van de gebaande paden durfde af te wijken en te verrassen. Of het nou een museum, cultureel centrum, hotel of een woontoren was, ik zocht ze allemaal op. Gebouwen die dateren van het einde van de twintigste eeuw tot heden. Dat werd de rode draad in mijn boek.
Voor wie is dit boek bestemd?
‘Voor iedereen die van reizen houdt en ook graag meer wil weten van moderne markante blikvangers in steden overal in de wereld. Zodat je deze iconische gebouwen ziet als een symbool van deze tijd. Of zoals de beroemde Braziliaanse architect Oscar Niemeyer het zo mooi verwoordde: “Architecture is not just a matter of technology, but a manifestation of mind, imagination and poetry”.
Ik heb bij alle gebouwen in mijn boek geprobeerd erachter te komen wat de architect ertoe dreef om zijn gebouw te realiseren. Dat was soms heel verrassend.’
Noem eens een paar grote verrassingen tijdens al je reizen?
‘Drie gebouwen hebben mijn hart veroverd: Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles van de Amerikaanse architect Frank Gehry, het Culture and Art Centre (MICA) in de Chinese stad Changsha van de Iraaks/Britse architect Hadid Zadid. Haar ontwerp is opvallend gedurfd met vloeiende vormen en als laatste het National Museum of Qatar van de Fransman Jean Nouvel een geweldig ontwerp geïnspireerd door een woestijnroos.
Qua land was de grote verrassing? China! Na de Olympische Spelen in Beijing (2008) zijn er veel opvallende moderne gebouwen verrezen. Niet alleen in de hoofdstad Beijing, maar ook in steden als Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Shenzen, Nanjing. Beroemde architecten uit heel de wereld hebben er adembenemende gebouwen neergezet.’
Patrick, tot slot: wat wil je bereiken met dit boek?
Wat ik wil bereiken met dit boek? Ik hoop dat lezers bij het zien van de foto’s en het lezen van de idee achter het ontwerp met andere, bewonderenswaardige ogen naar de moderne iconen van een stad gaan kijken. Sta even stil bij de vraag: hoe of waarom is zo'n architect nou tot dit idee gekomen? En geniet van de zinnenprikkelende constructies.’
The interview takes place in Patrick van der Doef's apartment in his hometown of Amsterdam. His study overlooks De Zuidas, also called the “Manhattan of Amsterdam”: a new district in the city with impressive residential towers and offices. In such inspiring surroundings, it must be wonderful to write a book about modern architecture. The author agrees. "If you like architecture, this is definitely the place to live and work. On his desk are numerous (photo) books on modern architecture. 'It's a hobby that got out of hand. But I also love to travel. Ideal if you are always looking for unusual architectural locations.' By now Patrick has visited over forty cities in seventeen different countries to take pictures of iconic buildings for his book.
Patrick, can you tell us why you created this book?
'Since 1997, when the futuristic Guggenheim Museum opened in Bilbao, there has been a veritable boom in iconic architecture. Bilbao was an industrial city in decline, but through architect Frank Gehry's design it has become a tourist attraction that attracts more than a million visitors a year. This is called the “Bilbao effect.” Now many cities around the world want a similar icon. Look at Valencia (Spain), Milwaukee (USA), Changsha (China), not to mention the Middle East (Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha). But multinationals, Chinese state institutions and hotels also want remarkable buildings that they use as their “calling card.”
The more I delved into this development, the more enthusiastic I became. More and more often I went out with my camera to capture iconic buildings. Thus arose the idea for this book with the title: ‘The Bilbao effect’.
I went in search of contemporary, iconic architecture that leaves an unforgettable impression; designs with which the architect dared to deviate from the beaten path and surprise. Whether it was a museum, cultural center, hotel or residential tower, I sought them all out. Buildings dating from the late 20th century to the present. That became the thread of my book.
For whom is this book intended?
'For anyone who loves to travel and would also like to know more about modern landmark landmarks in cities around the world. So that you see these iconic buildings as a symbol of our time. Or as the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer so beautifully put it, “Architecture is not just a matter of technology, but a manifestation of mind, imagination and poetry.”
For all the buildings in my book, I tried to find out what drove the architect to realize his building. That was sometimes very surprising.'
Name some big surprises during all your travels?
'Three buildings captured my heart: Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles by American architect Frank Gehry, the Culture and Art Centre (MICA) in the Chinese city of Changsha by Iraqi/British architect Hadid Zadid. Her design is strikingly bold with flowing forms and finally the National Museum of Qatar by Frenchman Jean Nouvel an amazing design inspired by a desert rose.
In terms of country, the big surprise was? China! After the Beijing Olympics (2008), many striking modern buildings have sprung up. Not only in the capital Beijing, but also in cities like Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Shenzen, Nanjing. Famous architects from all over the world have erected breathtaking buildings there.'
Patrick, in conclusion: what do you want to achieve with this book?
What I want to achieve with this book? I hope that readers, upon seeing the photos and reading the idea behind the design, will start looking at modern icons of a city with different, admirable eyes. Dwell for a moment on the question: how or why did such an architect come up with this idea? And enjoy the tantalizing constructions.'
